Attic Treasure
You’re helping your dad clean out your great grandparents home. The attic is a daunting task but you wonder what kind of treasure you might find up here. A noise draws your attention to the dark corner so you decide to start digging in there. The first box doesn’t yield much; just some old receipts and paperwork from a refrigerator purchased in 1958. The second box isn’t much better so you drop it on the throw away pile with a puff of dust.
Finally, with the third box, you find a treasure trove of antique pictures. Some of them are practically new, being from the 1950’s, but the ones you’re truly interested in date back to the 1850’s and 1860’s according to the writing on the backs. Some have single people with their cheeks colored a light pink. Some are obviously post mortem pictures. You shudder. One picture draws your attention. It’s a group of 6 people in old style dress. The women wear hoopskirts and the men dress in their Sunday best.
Is there any family resemblance? Maybe. You stick it in your back pocket for further inspection later. A box in each hand, you travel back down the stairs to throw them away. Once that’s taken care of, you remember seeing a magnifying glass in your grandparents library. That would be a great thing to use to look at the old pictures better. You locate the magnifying glass and then head back outside to take a break under one of the ancient oak tree’s dotting the property.
Your great grandparents old home is in the background of the picture. It looks almost new. The family standing in front of it must be related to you since the house has been passed down throughout the ages. The magnifying glass moves from face to face until you get to the last one. You gasp and look again, closer. Is that your spouse? They seem to be pointing to an upstairs window. How is this possible? It looks just like them! As far as you know, they didn’t have relatives in the area yet.
What’s going on? What happens next?
